Research Engineer

Kimo Brandon

Kimo’s professional career began in 2008 when he completed cooperative learning employment at a global automotive supplier. During his co-op, Kimo designed and tested vehicle engine components. His greatest accomplishment in that capacity came after he discovered a critical issue with a specific component of a powertrain that had already entered production.  Kimo conducted focused testing and analysis, and ultimately designed and implemented a modified component and procedure that saved both the supplier and vehicle’s manufacturer millions of dollars in failure and warranty expenses. After achieving his Bachelor of Science, Kimo transitioned into research engineering investigations when he began work as a government contractor. Kimo then joined CRA in 2013.

Serving as an Investigator for the NHTSA’s SCI Program, Kimo has performed a multitude of crash and fire investigations that have included vehicle defects, occupant fatalities, electric vehicle fires, air bag inflator ruptures, autonomous vehicle technologies, air bag non-deployments, and rear-impact vehicle fires. He is also a subject-matter expert in emergency vehicle crashes, and has been assigned at the request of the NHTSA to conduct ambulance crash investigations across all three of the SCI regions.

Kimo is extensively involved in emergency services response and management.  He is an Interior Firefighter and State-certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), and currently serves as the Fire Chief of a local volunteer fire department. Kimo has 15 years of experience in emergency services, with more than 35 certifications from State, Federal, and national organization entities.  He is a State-certified Fire Investigator and has conducted more than 30 investigations in that capacity.
